MERI M. LOPEZ received her Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law where she graduated magna cum laude in the top 6% of her class. She was an Associate Writer and Editor of the California Law Review and International Law Journal and received honors for authoring the proposed note A Lesson from Prison: Judicially Created Right to Healthcare. She was awarded Academic Achievement Awards for having the highest grades in the class in Contracts I, Legal Skills I, and Law and the Political Process. Even though she had three little girls, she was consistently on the Dean’s List. She studied for and passed the notoriously difficult California State Bar on the first try while she was pregnant with her fourth daughter. Ms. López received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Utah where she was awarded the Howard Hughes Biological Research Scholarship. Ms. López has worked in the pharmaceutical industry both in clinical and pre-clinical research.
Although Ms. López considers herself a general law practitioner, she focuses much of her efforts on estate planning because it can help people avoid problems before they arise thus minimizing the emotional toll and financial drain of legal troubles. "Just as there is preventive medicine to keep you healthy, an ounce of preventive law in completing a good trust or will can save a pound of time and money in case of death or disability."
Ms. López also has experience in: consumer law, including insurance bad faith, construction defect, product liability and lemon law; mediation; business planning and transactions; and immigration law.
Ms. López is also active in the community where she serves as secretary and a founding board member on the Valley Elementary Educational Foundation. She was instrumental in organizing the first annual Cinco de Mayo 5K in 2007 benefiting the Foundation. Ms. López is an active member of the San Diego County Bar Association and the North County Bar Association. She is also a volunteer for the San Diego Legal Aid Society.
